7-Eleven (pronunciation: "seven-eleven") is an international chain of convenience stores, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, USA. The chain was founded in 1927 as an ice house storefront in Dallas. It was named Tote'm Stores between 1928 and 1946. After 70% of the company was acquired by Japanese affiliate Ito-Yokado in 1991, it was reorganized as a subsidiary of Seven-Eleven Japan Co., Ltd in 2005, and is now held by Seven & I Holdings Co., Ltd.

Etymology

The name 7-Eleven originated in 1946 when the stores were open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. It has been kept as the brand name since then, even though the stores are now open 24 hours a day.
