ACGIH

ACGIH (pronounced as "A-C-G-I-H"), also known as the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, is a professional association of industrial hygienists and practitioners dedicated to promoting health and safety within the workplace.

Etymology

The acronym ACGIH stands for American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. The organization was established in 1938 by a group of governmental industrial hygienists who aimed to share information and address community health concerns.

Definition

The ACGIH is a not-for-profit organization that provides industrial hygiene information and guidance. The organization is known for its publication of the Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) and Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs). These are guidelines (not standards) used by industrial hygienists in making decisions regarding safe levels of exposure to various hazards found in the workplace.
