Abattoir (/æbəˈtwɑːr/), also known as a slaughterhouse, is a facility where animals are slaughtered, most often (though not always) to provide food for humans.

The term "abattoir" comes from the French word abattre, which means 'to beat down'. It was first used in English in the early 19th century.
