Radiation Burn

Radiation burn (/ˌreɪdiˈeɪʃən bɜːrn/) is a damage to the skin or other biological tissue caused by exposure to radiation. The radiation types of greatest concern are thermal radiation, radio frequency energy, ultraviolet light and ionizing radiation.

The most common type of radiation burn is a sunburn caused by UV radiation. High exposure to X-rays during diagnostic medical imaging or radiotherapy can also result in radiation burns.

Etymology

The term "radiation burn" is derived from the Latin radiatio meaning "shining" and the Old English bærnan meaning "to burn".

Symptoms

The symptoms of radiation burns can be classified into acute and chronic symptoms. Acute symptoms include redness, itching, swelling, and pain. Chronic symptoms include changes in skin color, skin peeling, and the development of skin cancers.

Treatment

Treatment of radiation burns includes the use of topical steroids, oral pain medications, and in severe cases, skin grafting. The specific treatment depends on the severity of the burn and the type of radiation exposure.
