Airline

Airline (/ˈeərlaɪn/) is a company that provides air transport services for traveling passengers and freight. Airlines utilize aircraft to supply these services and may form partnerships or alliances with other airlines for codeshare agreements. Generally, airline companies are recognized with an air operating certificate or license issued by a governmental aviation body.

Etymology

The term "airline" was coined in the early 20th century and is a compound of "air" and "line", referring to a route or course along which something travels. The term was first used in reference to the schedule, or "line", created by the first air mail services, and has since been used to refer to air travel companies.
