Alleviate (pronounced: /əˈliː.vi.eɪt/) is a verb used in the medical field to describe the action of making pain or suffering less severe or more bearable. The term originates from the Latin word "levare" which means to lift, and the prefix "ad-" which means to or towards, thus giving the term the meaning "to lift towards".
