American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology

The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (pronounced: əˈmɛrɪkən bɔːrd ɒv ˌsaɪkiˈætrɪ ənd ˌnjʊərəˈlɒdʒi), often abbreviated as ABPN, is a non-profit organization that provides certification for psychiatrists and neurologists in the United States. The ABPN is one of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

Etymology

The term "American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology" is derived from the organization's purpose and location. "American" refers to the United States, where the board is based. "Board" is a term often used to denote a group of individuals who oversee a particular profession. "Psychiatry" and "Neurology" are the medical specialties that the board certifies.

History

The ABPN was founded in 1934 as a member board of the ABMS. The board's mission is to promote high quality patient care for people with psychiatric and neurological disorders. The ABPN achieves this by establishing certification and maintenance of certification processes for psychiatrists and neurologists.

Certification Process

The certification process of the ABPN involves a written and an oral examination. The written examination tests the knowledge of the candidate in their chosen specialty, while the oral examination tests their clinical skills. After passing these examinations, the candidate is awarded a certificate by the ABPN, signifying their competence in their specialty.
