Amlodipine

Amlodipine (pronounced am-LOE-di-peen) is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. It is a type of drug known as a calcium channel blocker.

Etymology

The term "Amlodipine" is derived from the components of the drug's chemical structure: "am" for amine, "lo" for long-acting, and "dipine" for dihydropyridine, the class of drug to which it belongs.

Usage

Amlodipine is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain). It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to manage these conditions. Amlodipine works by relaxing the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily, thereby reducing blood pressure and relieving symptoms of angina.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Amlodipine include edema (swelling), fatigue, palpitations, and dizziness. In rare cases, it can cause more serious side effects such as jaundice, hepatitis, and erythema multiforme.
