Amlodipine/Valsartan

Amlodipine/valsartan (pronunciation: am-LOE-di-peen/val-SAR-tan) is a combination medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It contains two active ingredients: amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker, and valsartan, an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB).

Etymology

The name "amlodipine" is derived from the components of the drug: "am" for aminopropyl, "lo" for long-acting, and "dipine" for dihydropyridine, the class of drug to which it belongs. "Valsartan" is a portmanteau of the terms "valine" and "angiotensin", indicating its action and the class of drug to which it belongs.

Usage

Amlodipine/valsartan is used when one drug is not controlling the blood pressure. Amlodipine works by relaxing the blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Valsartan works by blocking the action of certain natural substances that tighten the blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump more efficiently.
