Anaplastic Astrocytoma

Anaplastic astrocytoma (/əˌnæpləˈstɪk æstrəʊsɪˈtoʊmə/) is a type of brain tumor that originates from astrocytes, the star-shaped cells that make up the supportive tissue of the brain.

Etymology

The term "anaplastic" is derived from the Greek word "anaplasia" meaning "to form backward", referring to the regression of the differentiation of cells. "Astrocytoma" is derived from "astrocyte", the type of cell from which the tumor originates, and "-oma", a suffix in medical terminology for a tumor or neoplasm.

Description

Anaplastic astrocytomas are classified as grade III tumors by the World Health Organization (WHO). They are considered malignant and tend to grow faster and more aggressively than lower-grade astrocytomas. Symptoms can vary depending on the location of the tumor in the brain, but may include headaches, seizures, and changes in behavior or cognitive function.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of anaplastic astrocytoma typically involves a combination of neurological examination, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and biopsy. The definitive diagnosis is usually made based on the histological examination of the tumor tissue obtained during biopsy or surgery.

Treatment

Treatment for anaplastic astrocytoma often involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The goal of treatment is to remove or reduce the size of the tumor, control symptoms, and improve quality of life.

Prognosis

The prognosis for anaplastic astrocytoma can vary widely depending on factors such as the patient's age, overall health, and the extent of the tumor. Despite aggressive treatment, these tumors often recur, and may progress to a more malignant form known as glioblastoma.
