Anomie (/ˈænəˌmi/) is a sociological term that refers to a condition of instability resulting from a breakdown of standards and values or from a lack of purpose or ideals. The term was introduced by the French sociologist Émile Durkheim in his study of suicide.
Etymology
The term 'anomie' is derived from the Greek word 'anomia', meaning 'lawlessness' or 'without law'. It was first used in a sociological context by Durkheim in his 1897 work, 'Suicide'.
