Arm Span

Arm span or armspan (pronounced: /ɑːrm spæn/) is the physical measurement of the distance from one end of an individual's arms (measured at the fingertips) to the other when raised parallel to the horizon at shoulder height at a 90° angle.

Etymology

The term "arm span" is derived from the Old English words "earm" meaning "arm" and "spanne" meaning "span". The term "span" was originally used to denote the distance from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little finger of a man's hand, usually about 9 inches.

Measurement

The arm span measurement is usually very close to the person's height. In the medical field, this measurement, along with others, is used to ascertain certain health characteristics or conditions, such as Marfan Syndrome or malnutrition.
