Attributable Risk

Attributable risk (pronunciation: /ætˈrɪb.jʊ.tə.bəl rɪsk/), also known as risk difference, is a statistical concept widely used in epidemiology and public health. It is a measure of the difference in risk between exposed and unexposed individuals in a population.

Etymology

The term "attributable risk" is derived from the Latin word 'attribuere', meaning 'to assign', and the Old French word 'risque', which means 'danger'. It refers to the portion of the incidence of a disease in the exposed group that can be attributed to the exposure.

Definition

Attributable risk is defined as the difference in the rate of a condition between an exposed population and an unexposed population. It is used in epidemiological research to identify and quantify the amount of risk that is directly attributable to specific exposures.

Calculation

The calculation of attributable risk involves the incidence rate of a disease in the exposed group (Incidence in exposed) and the incidence rate of the disease in the non-exposed group (Incidence in non-exposed). The formula is as follows:

Attributable risk = Incidence in exposed - Incidence in non-exposed

Related Terms

  • Relative risk: A measure of the strength of the association between exposure and disease. It is the ratio of the incidence rate in the exposed group to the incidence rate in the non-exposed group.
  • Odds ratio: A measure of association which compares the odds of disease of those exposed to the odds of disease of those not exposed.
  • Risk factor: An aspect of personal behavior or lifestyle, an environmental exposure, or a hereditary characteristic that is associated with an increase in the occurrence of a particular disease.
