Autistic

Autistic (/ɔːˈtɪstɪk/), derived from the Greek word "autos" meaning "self", is a term used to describe a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. It is a key aspect of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a complex, lifelong developmental disability that typically appears during early childhood and can impact a person's social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation.

Definition

Autistic individuals often have difficulties with social interaction and communication, and may exhibit restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. These symptoms can range from mild to severe, and are often accompanied by other medical and mental health conditions.

Symptoms

Symptoms of autism can vary widely but often include difficulties with social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors or narrow, obsessive interests. These symptoms can be present from early childhood and can affect daily functioning.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of autism is typically made by a multidisciplinary team, often including a psychologist, psychiatrist, neurologist, and/or pediatrician. Diagnosis is based on behavior, not cause or mechanism.

Treatment

While there is no cure for autism, there are many treatment options available to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. These can include behavioral therapy, speech and occupational therapy, medication, and supportive services.
