Bachelor of Medicine (pronunciation: /ˈbætʃələr ɒv ˈmɛdɪsɪn/) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by universities and medical schools to students who have completed a course of study in medicine. The degree is one of the first professional degrees in medicine and is often combined with the Bachelor of Surgery degree.

Etymology

The term "Bachelor of Medicine" comes from the Latin baccalaureus medicinae. Baccalaureus is a term that was used in the Middle Ages to refer to a person who had achieved the first degree of study in a university, while medicinae is the Latin word for medicine.
