Banana split

A Banana split (/bəˈnænə splɪt/) is a popular dessert that originated in the United States. It is traditionally made with a banana, three scoops of ice cream, and various toppings.

Etymology

The term "banana split" is derived from the English words "banana" and "split". The dessert was first created in 1904 by David Evans Strickler, a pharmacist in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, who enjoyed inventing sundaes at the store's soda fountain.

Ingredients

A traditional banana split is made with a banana that is split lengthwise. The banana halves are then placed in a long dish called a boat. A scoop each of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream is placed in between the banana halves. The dessert is typically topped with whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and nuts, and drizzled with chocolate syrup, strawberry syrup, and pineapple syrup.

Variations

There are many variations of the banana split. Some versions use different types of ice cream, while others include additional toppings like caramel sauce, sprinkles, or fruits. In some regions, the banana split is served with a side of waffles or brownies.
