Beclometasone

Beclometasone (pronounced: bek-loe-MET-a-sone) is a type of corticosteroid medication primarily used in the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is also used to treat various allergic conditions such as hay fever and eczema.

Etymology

The term "Beclometasone" is derived from its chemical structure. The prefix "Becl-" is a modification of "chloro", referring to the presence of a chlorine atom in the molecule. The "-metasone" suffix is common in corticosteroid medications, indicating its classification and function.

Usage

Beclometasone is typically administered via inhalation to reduce inflammation in the lungs, thus improving breathing. It can also be applied topically to alleviate skin inflammation. It is often used in combination with other medications such as long-acting beta agonists (LABAs) for more severe cases of asthma or COPD.

Side Effects

Like all medications, Beclometasone can cause side effects. Common side effects include throat irritation, hoarseness, and candidiasis (thrush). More serious side effects may include adrenal insufficiency, bone loss, and eye problems such as glaucoma and cataracts.
