Bluetooth

Bluetooth (pronounced /ˈbluːtuːθ/) is a wireless technology standard used for exchanging data between fixed and mobile devices over short distances. It was originally conceived as a wireless alternative to RS-232 data cables.

Etymology

The name "Bluetooth" is an anglicised version of the Scandinavian Blåtand/Blåtann, the epithet of the tenth-century king Harald Bluetooth who united dissonant Danish tribes into a single kingdom. The implication is that Bluetooth does the same with communications protocols, uniting them into one universal standard.

History

Bluetooth was developed by telecommunications company Ericsson in 1994. It was later formalized by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), which now oversees its development and manages its licensing.

Functionality

Bluetooth uses a radio technology called frequency-hopping spread spectrum, which divides the data being sent and received into packets and transmits each of these packets on one of 79 designated Bluetooth channels. Each channel has a different frequency.
