Body Language

Body language (/ˈbɒdi ˈlæŋɡwɪdʒ/) is a type of non-verbal communication in which physical behaviors, as opposed to words, are used to express or convey information. Such behavior includes facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye movement, touch and the use of space.

Etymology

The term "body language" originates from the late 19th century, and it's a combination of the words "body" and "language", referring to the communication of thoughts and feelings through body movements, rather than spoken or written language.

  • Facial Expression: A facial expression is one or more motions or positions of the muscles beneath the skin of the face. These movements convey the emotional state of an individual to observers.
  • Gesture: A gesture is a form of non-verbal communication or non-vocal communication in which visible bodily actions communicate particular messages, either in place of, or in conjunction with, speech.
  • Eye Contact: Eye contact occurs when two people look at each other's eyes at the same time. In human beings, eye contact is a form of nonverbal communication and is thought to have a large influence on social behavior.

  • Kinesics: Kinesics is the interpretation of body motion communication such as facial expressions and gestures, nonverbal behavior related to movement of any part of the body or the body as a whole.
