Borna disease (pronounced: /ˈbɔːrnə/) is a rare and fatal neurologic disease of warm-blooded animals, caused by the Borna disease virus (BDV). The disease is named after the town of Borna in Saxony, Germany, where a large number of horses died from the disease in 1885.

Etymology

The term "Borna" originates from the town of Borna in Saxony, Germany, where the disease was first identified in horses in the late 19th century. The term "disease" is derived from the Old French "desaise", meaning lack of ease.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Borna disease can vary greatly depending on the species of the infected animal. In horses and sheep, symptoms can include depression, excitability, and abnormal posture and gait. In cats and dogs, symptoms can include fever, anorexia, and seizures. In humans, Borna disease is believed to cause psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, although this is still a subject of ongoing research.

Transmission

Borna disease is primarily transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or their bodily fluids. The virus can also be spread through the air, although this is less common. There is no evidence to suggest that Borna disease can be transmitted from person to person.

Treatment

There is currently no specific treatment for Borna disease. Management of the disease involves supportive care and treatment of symptoms. Antiviral drugs may be used in some cases, although their effectiveness is not well established.

Prevention

Prevention of Borna disease involves avoiding contact with infected animals and their bodily fluids. Vaccination is not currently available for this disease.
