CAD - A disease in which there is a narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries (blood vessels that carry blood and oxygen to the heart). CAD is usually caused by atherosclerosis (a buildup of fat and plaque in the coronary arteries). The disease can cause chest pain, shortness of breath during exercise, and heart attacks. The risk of CHD is increased if there is a family history of CHD before age 50, older age, tobacco smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, physical inactivity, and obesity. Also called coronary artery disease and coronary artery disease
