Government Medical College, Kozhikode

The Government Medical College, Kozhikode (pronunciation: [koːɻikːoːɖ] (Koṛikkoṭ), also known as Calicut Medical College, is a premier medical education institution located in the city of Kozhikode (formerly Calicut) in Kerala, India.

Etymology

The name "Kozhikode" is derived from "koyil" (palace) "kota" (fort), meaning 'fortified palace'. The city was known as the "City of Spices" for its role in the historic spice trade.

History

Established in 1957, the college was initially affiliated with the University of Kerala, and later with the University of Calicut. It is currently affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS).

Courses

The college offers undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MD, MS, M.Ch, DM), diploma, and super-specialty courses in various disciplines of medicine and allied health sciences. It also offers nursing and paramedical courses.

Facilities

The college has a well-equipped hospital, research centres, hostels, and other facilities. It is known for its Cancer Research Centre, Chest Hospital, and Institute of Maternal and Child Health.

Many of its alumni have made significant contributions to the field of medicine in India and abroad.
