A calorie is a unit of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celcius. This calorie is often written with a small c as opposed to the kilocalorie which is the more commonly used measure often written with the big or capital C or Kcal. When people refer to calories in food, they often mean calories but may just say calories meaning the kilocalories.
A calorie is commonly used measure of food energy. An average person might need about 2000-2500 calories a day to give an example. When one is trying to lose weight, the goal is to under cut the calories so the body has to burn excess fat to help in losing weight.
