Carbimazole

Carbimazole (pronounced: kar-bim-a-zole) is a medication commonly used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism, a condition characterized by an overactive thyroid gland.

Etymology

The term "Carbimazole" is derived from its chemical structure, which is a carbethoxy derivative of imidazole. The name is a combination of "carb-" from carboxyl, "-im-" from imidazole, and "-azole", a common suffix for imidazole derivatives.

Usage

Carbimazole is primarily used to manage hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland produces excessive amounts of thyroid hormones. It works by reducing the production of these hormones. It may also be used before thyroid surgery to lower thyroid hormone levels and minimize the risks associated with surgery.

Related Terms

  • Hyperthyroidism: A condition in which the thyroid gland is overactive and makes excessive amounts of thyroid hormone.
  • Thyroid gland: A butterfly-shaped organ located in the base of your neck. It releases hormones that control metabolism.
  • Imidazole: An organic compound that serves as the basis for many important biologically active substances.

Side Effects

Like all medications, Carbimazole can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Some common side effects include nausea, headaches, joint pain, and mild skin rash. More serious side effects include changes in blood cell counts, liver problems, and severe skin reactions.

Precautions

Before starting treatment with Carbimazole, it is important to inform your doctor if you have any allergies or if you have any current or past health conditions such as liver disease, blood disorders, or weakened immune system.
