Catamenial Pneumothorax (pronunciation: kat-uh-MEN-ee-uhl new-muh-thor-aks) is a rare condition predominantly affecting women of reproductive age. The term is derived from the Greek words "katamenia" (meaning monthly) and "pneumothorax" (meaning air in the chest cavity).

Definition

Catamenial Pneumothorax is a type of pneumothorax that occurs in conjunction with the menstrual cycle. It is characterized by the recurrent collapse of a lung, specifically the right lung, during or shortly after menstruation.

Etiology

The exact cause of Catamenial Pneumothorax is not fully understood. However, it is believed to be related to the presence of endometrial tissue in the thoracic cavity, a condition known as thoracic endometriosis. This tissue responds to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, leading to air leakage into the pleural space and subsequent lung collapse.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Catamenial Pneumothorax are similar to those of a regular pneumothorax, and may include chest pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue. These symptoms typically occur within 72 hours of the onset of menstruation.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Catamenial Pneumothorax is often challenging due to its rarity and the nonspecific nature of its symptoms. It is typically confirmed through a combination of patient history, physical examination, and imaging studies such as a chest X-ray or CT scan.

Treatment

Treatment for Catamenial Pneumothorax typically involves managing the immediate symptoms and preventing recurrence. This may include procedures to remove air from the chest cavity and surgery to remove any endometrial tissue present. Hormonal therapy may also be used to manage the condition.
