Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN)

Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) (/ˈsiːfæn/; etymology: derived from the English words "Center", "Food", "Safety", "Applied", and "Nutrition") is a branch of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that provides services and information to protect and promote public health.

History

The CFSAN was established in 1992, following a reorganization of the FDA. It combined the functions of the Bureau of Foods and the Bureau of Drugs, which were previously separate entities within the FDA.

Function

The CFSAN is responsible for promoting and protecting the public's health by ensuring that the nation's food supply is safe, sanitary, wholesome, and honestly labeled. It also ensures that cosmetics are safe and properly labeled.

Structure

The CFSAN is composed of the Office of Food Safety, the Office of Cosmetics and Colors, and the Office of Dietary Supplement Programs. Each office has specific responsibilities and functions within the CFSAN.

Office of Food Safety

The Office of Food Safety is responsible for the safety of all foods, except for those regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Office of Cosmetics and Colors

The Office of Cosmetics and Colors is responsible for ensuring the safety and proper labeling of cosmetics and color additives used in foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices.

Office of Dietary Supplement Programs

The Office of Dietary Supplement Programs is responsible for the regulation of dietary supplement products and ingredients.
