Cephalometry

Cephalometry (pronounced: sef-uh-LOM-uh-tree) is a scientific measurement method used in the field of Orthodontics and Radiology to study the size and relationships of the human skull, particularly the facial bones. The term is derived from the Greek words 'kephale' meaning head and 'metron' meaning measure.

History

The use of cephalometry in orthodontics began in the early 20th century, with the work of Holly Broadbent Sr. and his son, Holly Broadbent Jr., who developed the Broadbent-Bolton standards for cephalometric analysis.

Method

Cephalometry involves the use of X-ray images to make precise measurements and assessments. The most common type of cephalometric imaging is the lateral cephalometric radiograph, which provides a side view of the face.

Applications

Cephalometry is used in various fields such as orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and sleep medicine. In orthodontics, it is used to plan treatment, predict future changes, and evaluate the results of orthodontic treatment. In oral and maxillofacial surgery, it is used to plan surgical procedures. In sleep medicine, it is used to study the airway and diagnose conditions such as Sleep Apnea.
