Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (pronunciation: sər-ti-fīd rĕj′ĭ-stĕrd nûrs ăn′ĭs-thĭ-tĭst), often abbreviated as CRNA, is a type of advanced practice Registered Nurse who has specialized in the administration of Anesthesia.
Etymology
The term "Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist" is derived from the certification and registration process that a nurse must undergo to become an anesthetist. The term "Anesthetist" is derived from the Greek word "anēstēsia", meaning "without sensation".
Role and Responsibilities
A CRNA is responsible for administering anesthesia during surgical, therapeutic, diagnostic, and obstetrical procedures. They also provide pain management and emergency services, such as airway management. Their role includes preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care, patient assessment, and the creation of an anesthesia plan.
Education and Certification
To become a CRNA, a nurse must first obtain a Bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field, and then gain experience in critical care nursing. They must then complete a master's or doctoral degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program and pass the National Certification Examination (NCE) administered by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).
