Chef

Chef (/ʃɛf/; French: [ʃɛf]), from the French: chef de cuisine (literally "head of the kitchen"), is a professional cook who is proficient in all aspects of food preparation and often focuses on a particular cuisine. The term can also refer to the individual in charge of all matters related to the kitchen, including menu creation, management of kitchen staff, ordering and purchasing of inventory, and plating design.

Etymology

The word "chef" is borrowed (and shortened) from the French chef de cuisine, meaning "head of the kitchen". The term originated from the Latin caput (head) and is a doublet with the English "chief". In English, the title "chef" in the culinary profession originated in the haute cuisine of the 19th century.
