Chief

Chief (/ʧi:f/), from the Old French chef or chief, meaning "leader" or "head", is a term used in various contexts in the medical field. It can refer to a senior or leading position, such as a Chief Medical Officer or Chief Resident, or it can be used to describe the primary or most significant symptom or condition in a patient's presentation, known as the chief complaint.

Chief Medical Officer

A Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is a physician who holds the highest-ranking medical position in a healthcare organization. The CMO is responsible for overseeing the quality of care and the medical staff in the organization. They often work closely with other executives to develop and implement policies and procedures that promote patient safety and satisfaction.

Chief Resident

A Chief Resident is a title given to a senior resident who is responsible for coordinating the activities and training of the other residents in their program. The Chief Resident serves as a liaison between the residents and the program's leadership, and they often have additional administrative and teaching responsibilities.

Chief Complaint

The Chief Complaint is the primary symptom or condition that a patient reports during a medical visit. It is often recorded at the beginning of the patient's medical history and is used to guide the rest of the examination and diagnostic process. The Chief Complaint is a critical component of the medical record, as it provides context for the patient's condition and helps to prioritize their care.
