Citrus fruit

Citrus fruit (/ˈsɪtrəs/), from the Latin citrus, is a genus of flowering trees and shrubs in the rue family, Rutaceae. Plants in the genus produce citrus fruits, including important crops such as oranges, lemons, grapefruits, pomelos, and limes.

Etymology

The word citrus is derived from the Ancient Greek word for "cedar," κέδρος (kédros). This may be due to the similar smell of citrus leaves and fruit with that of cedar. Citrus fruits have been cultivated since ancient times, and are believed to have originated in Southeast Asia.

Types of Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits are classified into several types:

  • Orange - The orange is a hybrid, between pomelo and mandarin. It has been cultivated since ancient times and is now the most commonly grown tree fruit in the world.
  • Lemon - The lemon is a species of small evergreen tree native to Asia, primarily used for its juice, though the pulp and rind are also used, primarily in cooking and baking.
  • Grapefruit - The grapefruit is a subtropical citrus tree known for its relatively large sour to semi-sweet fruit.
  • Pomelo - The pomelo is the largest citrus fruit from the family Rutaceae and the principal ancestor of the grapefruit.
  • Lime - A lime is a hybrid citrus fruit, which is typically round, green in color, 3–6 centimetres in diameter, and contains acidic juice vesicles.

Health Benefits

Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants, making them beneficial for health. They are known to boost the immune system, improve skin health, and aid in weight loss. They also have potential anti-cancer properties and are good for heart health.
