Clear-cell ovarian carcinoma

Clear-cell ovarian carcinoma (pronunciation: kleer-sel oh-vuh-ree-uhn kar-si-noh-muh) is a subtype of ovarian cancer that is characterized by the presence of clear cells, which are a type of cell that can be seen under a microscope.

Etymology

The term "clear-cell" refers to the appearance of the cells under a microscope, while "carcinoma" is derived from the Greek words "karkinos" meaning crab and "oma" meaning tumor, referring to a cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs. "Ovarian" refers to the ovary, the organ in which this type of cancer originates.

Description

Clear-cell ovarian carcinoma is a rare form of ovarian cancer, accounting for approximately 5-10% of all ovarian cancer cases. It is often diagnosed at an advanced stage and has a poorer prognosis compared to other types of ovarian cancer. The clear cells in clear-cell ovarian carcinoma are larger than normal cells and contain a clear cytoplasm, which is the material within a living cell, excluding the cell nucleus.

Symptoms

The symptoms of clear-cell ovarian carcinoma are similar to those of other types of ovarian cancer and may include abdominal bloating or swelling, quickly feeling full when eating, weight loss, discomfort in the pelvis area, changes in bowel habits such as constipation, and a frequent need to urinate.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of clear-cell ovarian carcinoma typically involves a combination of physical examination, imaging tests such as ultrasound or CT scan, and a biopsy where a sample of tissue is removed for examination under a microscope.

Treatment

Treatment for clear-cell ovarian carcinoma typically involves surgery to remove as much of the cancer as possible, followed by chemotherapy. In some cases, targeted therapy or immunotherapy may also be used.
