It is part of the Case Western Reserve University and is one of the leading medical research institutions in the United States.

Etymology

The name "Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine" is derived from the university's history. The university was formed in 1967 through the federation of two longstanding contiguous institutions: Western Reserve University, founded in 1826 and named for its location in the Connecticut Western Reserve, and Case Institute of Technology, founded in 1880 through the endowment of Leonard Case, Jr. The medical school has been in existence since the founding of Western Reserve University.
