Clinical Neuropsychology

Clinical neuropsychology (pronunciation: kli-ni-kal noor-oh-sy-kol-uh-jee) is a sub-specialty of psychology concerned with the applied science of brain-behavior relationships. This field uses principles of assessment and intervention based upon the scientific study of human behavior as it relates to normal and abnormal functioning of the central nervous system.

Etymology

The term "Clinical neuropsychology" is derived from three words: 'Clinical' (from the Greek word 'klinikos', meaning 'bed'), 'neuro' (from the Greek word 'neuron', meaning 'nerve') and 'psychology' (from the Greek words 'psyche', meaning 'soul' and 'logos', meaning 'study'). Thus, it can be interpreted as the study of the soul or mind in relation to the nervous system, in a clinical or therapeutic context.
