- Coliforms are a group of bacteria which are present in water and the guts of people and animals. Some coliforms can cause disease. In the coliform test, liquid (e.g. water or milk) is added to a purple broth in a test tube, with a small inverted tube at the bottom of the test tube. Coliforms produce acid and gas. The acid causes the broth to change colour from purple to yellow and the gas causes the small inverted tube to rise up the test tube (see also e-coli)
