Combat Stress Reaction

Combat stress reaction (CSR), also known as battle fatigue or shell shock, is a range of behaviors resulting from the stress of battle that decrease the combatant's fighting efficiency. The most common symptoms are fatigue, slower reaction times, indecision, disconnection from one's surroundings, and inability to prioritize.

Pronunciation: /ˈkɒmbæt strɛs riˈækʃən/

Etymology: The term "combat stress reaction" is a military term that originated in the 20th century. "Combat" is derived from the Latin "combattere", meaning "to fight". "Stress" comes from the Latin "strictus", meaning "tight, compressed, drawn together". "Reaction" is from the Latin "reactio", meaning "a response".

Symptoms

The symptoms of CSR can be divided into four main categories: physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral. Physical symptoms can include fatigue, headaches, and heart palpitations. Cognitive symptoms can include confusion, disorientation, and difficulty making decisions. Emotional symptoms can include anxiety, guilt, and fear. Behavioral symptoms can include withdrawal, aggression, and poor performance.

Causes

The causes of CSR are not fully understood, but it is believed to be a response to the extreme stress of military combat. This can include the fear of death or injury, the physical demands of battle, and the moral and ethical challenges that can arise in a combat situation.

Treatment

Treatment for CSR typically involves a combination of rest, reassurance, and return to the combat line. In some cases, medication may be used to help manage symptoms. Psychotherapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy, may also be used.
