Comedo Extraction

Comedo extraction (/kɒˈmiːdoʊ/; from Latin comedo, "eat up") is a common procedure performed by dermatologists, estheticians, and other skin care professionals to remove blackheads and whiteheads.

Definition

A comedo is a clogged hair follicle (pore) in the skin. Keratin (skin debris) combines with oil to block the follicle. A comedo can be open (blackhead) or closed by skin (whitehead), and occur with or without acne. The word comedo comes from Latin to suggest the worm-like look of a blackhead that has been secreted.

Procedure

Comedo extraction involves the use of a special tool known as a comedone extractor to remove the plug of sebum and dead skin cells that have formed the comedo. The extractor is a small metal instrument with a loop at one end that is gently pressed over the comedo, allowing the trapped sebum to be pushed out and the pore to be cleaned.

Risks and Complications

While comedo extraction is generally considered safe, it can potentially lead to skin damage if not performed correctly. Risks include scarring, infection, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It is recommended that the procedure be performed by a trained professional to minimize these risks.
