Computational Chemistry

Computational chemistry (pronunciation: /kəmˌpjuːtəˈreɪʃənəl ˈkɛmɪstri/) is a branch of chemistry that uses computer simulation to assist in solving chemical problems. It uses methods of theoretical chemistry, incorporated into efficient computer programs, to calculate the structures and properties of molecules and solids.

Etymology

The term "computational chemistry" is believed to have been coined in the late 20th century, with the advent of powerful computers and sophisticated software that could perform complex calculations. The term "computational" comes from the Latin computare, meaning "to calculate", and "chemistry" from the Greek khēmeía, meaning "the art of mixing".
