Computer Vision

Computer Vision (pronounced: kuhm-pyoo-ter vi-zhuhn) is a field of Artificial Intelligence that trains computers to interpret and understand the visual world.

Etymology

The term "Computer Vision" is derived from the words "computer", which comes from the Latin word computare meaning "to calculate", and "vision", which comes from the Latin word visio meaning "sight".

Definition

Computer Vision is a scientific field that includes methods for acquiring, processing, analyzing, and understanding images and, in general, high-dimensional data from the real world in order to produce numerical or symbolic information. It involves the extraction of high-dimensional data from the real world to produce numerical or symbolic information. This field is concerned with the theory behind artificial systems that extract information from images.

Related Terms

  • Image Processing: A method to perform some operations on an image, in order to get an enhanced image or to extract some useful information from it.
  • Machine Learning: A type of artificial intelligence (AI) that allows software applications to become more accurate in predicting outcomes without being explicitly programmed to do so.
  • Pattern Recognition: The automated recognition of patterns and regularities in data.
  • Artificial Intelligence: The simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems.
  • Deep Learning: A subset of machine learning in artificial intelligence (AI) that has networks capable of learning unsupervised from data that is unstructured or unlabeled.

Applications

Computer Vision has a wide range of applications, including Image Recognition, Object Detection, Medical Image Analysis, Self-driving Cars, and Facial Recognition Systems.
