Courtship (/ˈkɔːrtʃɪp/) is a period in a couple's relationship which precedes their engagement and marriage, or establishment of an agreed relationship of a more enduring kind.

Etymology

The term "courtship" originated in the 16th century and is derived from the Old French word courter, which means to court.

Definition

Courtship is the traditional dating period before engagement and marriage. During this period, a couple gets to know each other, meet each other's family and friends, and discuss their future together. Courtship can also involve traditional practices and rituals leading to a lifelong partnership.
