deep breathing - (. . . BREE thing) relaxation technique in which a person focuses on taking slow, deep breaths. Deep breathing means slowly inhaling through your nose and then exhaling through your mouth, using your diaphragm (the thin muscle that separates your chest from your stomach) and abdominal muscles. This helps increase the amount of oxygen in the blood, lower blood pressure and heart rate, and reduce muscle tension. Deep breathing can be used to relieve stress, pain, and anxiety. Also called abdominal breathing and diaphragmatic breathing
