Depressed mood (pronunciation: /dɪˈprɛst muːd/) is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person's thoughts, behavior, feelings, and sense of well-being.

Etymology

The term "depressed mood" is derived from the Latin word "deprimere", meaning "to press down". The term "mood" comes from the Old English "mōd", which means "mind" or "spirit".

Definition

A depressed mood is a normal temporary reaction to life events such as loss of a loved one. It is also a symptom of some physical diseases and a side effect of some drugs and medical treatments. It may also be a symptom of certain psychiatric syndromes such as major depressive disorder or dysthymia.

Symptoms

People suffering from a depressed mood may exhibit a range of symptoms, including:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or emptiness
  • Hopelessness
  • Irritability
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
