Dormitories (pronunciation: /ˈdɔːrmɪtɔːriːz/), also known as dorms, are buildings or sections of buildings that provide sleeping and residential quarters for large numbers of people, often boarding school, college or university students. In the UK, they are also known as halls of residence (pronunciation: /hɔːlz ɒv ˈrɛzɪdəns/), or simply halls.

Etymology

The term "dormitory" originates from the Latin word "dormitorium", which means "sleeping place". The term "halls of residence" is a British term, which refers to the buildings or sections of buildings where students live during their studies.
