Drug-induced aseptic meningitis (pronunciation: /drʌg ɪnˈdjuːst əˈsɛptɪk mɛnɪnˈdʒaɪtɪs/) is a rare form of meningitis that is not caused by an infection, but by certain drugs.

Etymology

The term "drug-induced" refers to conditions caused by the use of medication. "Aseptic" is derived from the Greek word "aseptikos", meaning "free from putrefaction". "Meningitis" is derived from the Greek words "meninx" (meaning "membrane") and "-itis" (meaning "inflammation").

Definition

Drug-induced aseptic meningitis is a condition where the layers of the meninges, the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, become inflamed due to a reaction to certain drugs. This inflammation is not caused by a bacterial or viral infection, which differentiates it from other forms of meningitis.

Causes

The most common drugs known to cause this condition include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antibiotics such as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and immunosuppressive drugs like azathioprine and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG).

Symptoms

Symptoms of drug-induced aseptic meningitis can be similar to those of infectious meningitis and may include headache, fever, stiff neck, and sensitivity to light. However, unlike infectious meningitis, patients with drug-induced aseptic meningitis do not typically have bacteria or viruses present in their cerebrospinal fluid.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is typically made by ruling out infectious causes of meningitis through laboratory tests, including a lumbar puncture to examine the cerebrospinal fluid. The patient's medical history and the timing of symptoms in relation to drug use are also considered.

Treatment

Treatment involves discontinuing the offending drug and managing symptoms. In most cases, the condition resolves once the drug is stopped.
