Drug Detoxification

Drug detoxification (pronounced: drʌg diːtɒksɪfɪˈkeɪʃ(ə)n), also known as drug detox, is a process that involves the removal of toxic substances from the body. It is often the first step in a drug rehabilitation program.

Etymology

The term "detoxification" comes from the Latin "de-" meaning "from" or "out of" and "toxicum" meaning "poison". The term "drug" is derived from the Old French "drogue", possibly deriving later into 'droge-vate' from Middle Dutch meaning 'dry barrels', referring to medicinal plants preserved in them.

Process

Drug detoxification is designed to manage acute intoxication and withdrawal symptoms. It involves a process of allowing the body to rid itself of a drug while managing the symptoms of withdrawal. It is often the first step in a drug treatment program and should be followed by treatment with a psychosocial approach.

Types of Drug Detox

There are several types of drug detox, including medical detoxification, rapid detox, and home detox. The type of detox chosen depends on the type of drug, the severity of the addiction, the patient's personal health and well-being, and other factors.
