Dumping
Dumping Syndrome
Dumping syndrome (/ˈdʌmpɪŋ ˈsɪndroʊm/), also known as rapid gastric emptying, is a medical condition that occurs when food, especially sugar, moves from your stomach into your small bowel too quickly.
Etymology
The term "dumping" refers to the rapid "dumping" of food from the stomach into the small bowel.
Symptoms
Symptoms of dumping syndrome can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, dizziness, and fatigue. These symptoms can be categorized into two types: early and late. Early dumping syndrome occurs within 30 minutes to an hour after a meal. Late dumping syndrome occurs 1 to 3 hours after eating.
Causes
Dumping syndrome is most often associated with certain types of stomach surgery, such as gastrectomy or gastric bypass surgery. It can also occur in people who have not had surgery, but this is less common.
Treatment
Treatment for dumping syndrome typically includes changes in eating habits and medication. People with this condition may need to eat smaller meals throughout the day, avoid foods high in sugar, and increase their intake of protein and fiber. Medications, such as octreotide and lanreotide, can also slow stomach emptying and help control symptoms.
