Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) /ɪˈlɛktrɒnɪk deɪtə ˈɪntərˌtʃeɪndʒ/ is the concept of businesses electronically communicating information that was traditionally communicated on paper, such as purchase orders and invoices.

Etymology

The term "Electronic Data Interchange" was first used in the late 1960s, with the development of electronic communication methods. The term is derived from the English words "electronic" (pertaining to electronics or devices, systems, or techniques using or concerned with electricity), "data" (facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis), and "interchange" (an exchange of information).
