The English language (pronunciation: /ˈɪŋɡlɪʃ/) is a West Germanic language that originated from the Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain by Germanic settlers and Roman auxiliary troops from various parts of what is now northwest Germany and the northern Netherlands in the 5th century.
Etymology
The term "English" is derived from the Angles, one of the Germanic tribes that migrated to England, and "Englisc" was the adjective they used to describe their tribe, their language, and their culture.
