Eyesight

Eyesight (pronunciation: /ˈaɪsaɪt/), also known as visual perception or vision, is the ability of the eye and brain to detect and interpret visible light, forming images for understanding the environment around us. The term originates from the Old English words 'eage' (eye) and 'sihth' (sight).

Anatomy of the Eye

The human eye is a complex organ that includes various parts, each playing a crucial role in the process of vision. These include:

  • The Cornea: The clear front surface of the eye that helps to focus light.
  • The Iris: The colored part of the eye that controls the amount of light entering the eye.
  • The Pupil: The black circular opening in the iris that lets light in.
  • The Lens: A clear structure located behind the iris that helps to focus light onto the retina.
  • The Retina: A layer at the back of the eye that contains cells sensitive to light.

Visual Process

The process of vision begins when light enters the eye through the cornea. It then passes through the pupil, controlled by the iris, and reaches the lens. The lens focuses this light onto the retina, which converts it into electrical signals. These signals are then sent to the brain via the Optic Nerve, where they are interpreted as images.
