Eyestrain

Eyestrain (/ˈaɪˌstreɪn/), also known as asthenopia (/æsθɪˈnoʊpiə/), is a condition characterized by discomfort or pain in or around the eyes, often caused by excessive use of the eyes, particularly during activities that require intense focus such as reading, driving, or using a computer.

Etymology

The term "eyestrain" is derived from the English words "eye" and "strain", referring to the stress or fatigue experienced by the eyes. The term "asthenopia" comes from the Greek words "asthenes" (weak) and "ops" (eye), literally translating to "weak eye".

Symptoms

Symptoms of eyestrain may include headache, blurred vision, dry or watery eyes, increased sensitivity to light, difficulty focusing, and discomfort in the neck, shoulders, or back. These symptoms may be exacerbated by poor lighting, glare on a digital screen, improper viewing distances, poor seating posture, or a combination of these factors.

Causes

Eyestrain is often caused by activities that involve extended use of the eyes. This includes reading, writing, driving, or staring at digital screens for long periods. Other factors that can contribute to eyestrain include exposure to bright light or glare, straining to see in very dim light, and air movement (such as that from a fan, heating or air-conditioning system).

Prevention and Treatment

Prevention and treatment of eyestrain often involve taking steps to reduce eye fatigue. This can include taking regular breaks from visually demanding tasks, adjusting the lighting to reduce glare on screens, and making sure the workspace is ergonomically designed. In some cases, corrective lenses may be recommended.
